Rough Riders Combine Round Up

The Long Island Rough Riders took another step forward towards the 2010 season as they hosted the final day of their Invitational Combine at the Globall Sports Facility at Cunningham Park, Fresh Meadows.

The players came from far and wide for a chance of playing for the Rough Riders. The invitees all had played at a high level in the New York state area and beyond with familiar faces to Long Island’s premier soccer franchise, such as Shaun Higgins, Rough Riders Technical Director and player,  featuring on the pitch as well. “The second day of the combine showed great promise.  It was exciting to see hungry, skilled players competing for positions.  The quality is definitely there, said Shaun. "Being part of the Rough Riders for years I have learned that the atmosphere in practice has a direct relation to achieving results come game day.  This squad has depth and the constant push from players wishing to earn roster spots and break into starting lineup will only make the squad stronger as the season approaches.  The focus of this team is winning a national championship and the dedication and desire was evident at this combine.”

The players were put through two rigorous training sessions during the combine consisting of fitness, technical work, shooting practice, small sided games and finally 8 v 8’s.

“I am very pleased with the quality of the players at the combine, the returning players came in and did a great job of testing the invitees to the maximum,” said Flavio Ferri, Rough Riders GM. “We now have a clear picture of which players we think can make an impact at this level. The management team will now sit down and discuss the group and invite successful players back for the next combine. At this point we are in great shape for the upcoming season.”

For the 2010 season, the Rough Riders roster will consist of twenty-six players, which can include eight internationals and eight players over the age of 23. The Rough Riders will be holding their next combines in February and April before the Rough Riders first PDL league game in May, 2010.
