Rough Riders Tie Flames

Westchester, NY (May 29, 2010) - The Long Island Rough Riders first tie of the season occurred this past Memorial Day weekend.  The Westchester Flames battled against Long Island at City Park Stadium for a victory but after stoppage time, the Rough Riders evened the score for a 1-1 tie.

In the 20th minute, Flames’ Christopher Richards scored a goal assisted by Stedman over goalie Billy Gatti.  This goal forced the Rough Riders to become more aggressive.  The defense tightened up as the Flames struggled to move up the field.

The Rough Riders returned to the field after halftime looking to even the score.  Long Island’s Luke Magill kept up with the Flames’ sneaky passes and kept the ball in the Rough Riders’ possession.  Michael Todd came off the bench for the Rough Riders near the end of the second half and made a huge impact.  Todd tied the game off a cross with only seconds remaining in stoppage time.  With the tie, the Rough Riders qualified for the US Open Cup.

“This was a hard fought game on both sides of the ball,” said Rough Riders Head Coach Paul Roderick.  “Both squads matched up evenly, and Wednesday’s rematch should be another exciting game.”

The Long Island Rough Riders Men are 3-0-1 thus far this season.  The next men’s home game is a rematch against the Flames.  This will take place today, June 2nd at 7:30pm at Cy Donnelly Stadium.
