Plainview, NY (July 27, 2010) – The Long Island Rough Riders Men’s team defeated the New Hampshire Phantoms 3-1 on Saturday, and succumbed to the MPS Portland Phoenix 5-1 the following day in their final two games of the season. The team finished with an 8-4-4 record (28 points), good for fourth in the Northeast Division.
Long Island beat New Hampshire thanks to two goals from Dominick Sarle and one from Frank Costigliola. Costigliola opened the scoring for the Rough Riders in the 26th minute with an unassisted goal, evening the score at one. Sarle notched his first in the 75th to give Long Island a 2-1 lead, and rounded off the scoring with a goal in the 85th after a pass from Adam Weinzimer.
Dominick Sarle, who is only 17 years old, finished his first season in the Premier Development League with 13 points, six goals and one assist in only 13 games played.
On Sunday, Mark Secko scored in the 26th to even the score at one, but MPS went on to score four unanswered. Justin Corke made 20 saves for the Rough Riders.
“I am proud of the effort we gave this weekend, but it was always going to be difficult to win two games in two days,” Coach Paul Roderick said. “This is a good group though, and I think we have a real shot of making the playoffs in 2011.”
The Rough Riders finished two spots away from a playoff birth.
