Women Split Weekend Rematches

Women Defeat Magic

The Long Island Rough Riders women’s team once again defeated the New York Magic on Saturday, May 29th, at Iona College in New Rochelle. The team looked strong in a hard fought rematch of the season opener, winning 3-2.

New York’s Becky Brown opened the scoring in the 8th minute, only to see Long Island’s Kaila Sciascia equalize in the 10th.  Sciascia finished into an empty net following a misjudgment from Magic goalkeeper Sandita McDermott.  The Rough Riders controlled the majority of possession in the first 30 minutes. Their play paid off in the 34th minute when Danielle Murino finished a cross form Akilah Duggan, making the score 2-1.

In the 72nd minute, New York’s Rasitidah Sherman leveled the game at 2, and put Long Island’s victory in doubt.  Four minutes later, Brooke DeRosa popped up to be the hero for Long Island, heading in Brianna Salvia’s cross to win the game after confusion amongst the Magic back line.

Women Fall to Quickstrike

Only 24 hours later, the Rough Riders traveled to Newburgh Free Academy High School to face the Hudson Valley Quickstrike looking for revenge from their 3-1 loss earlier this season.

The first half of the game was tense.  The rematch was scoreless until the 44th minute when Hudson Valley’s Jackie Acevedo struck off of a pass from Alicia Tirelli.  In the 61st minute of play, the Lady Blues once again pressed down the field and notched another goal.  Tirelli provided the assist for the second goal as well, setting up Gabriela Demoner for the final goal of the game.  Despite two shots a piece from Molly Dreska and Brooke DeRosa, the Rough Riders were unable to find the back of the net.

The Long Island Rough Riders record is now 2-2.  Their next home game is Saturday, June 19th, at 5pm at Cy Donnelly Field in Huntington.
